The Beatles-White Album

For those of us that love the idea of melding pop music with subversive art, the future was all layed out right here. So much of what is done today is really just a repetition of what the Beatles did first. The White Album still holds up as a muscial journey from beginning to end.

The Sex Pistols-Never Mind The Bollocks

This album changed everything. Although most people have never even heard it, from the day it was released rock music was divided into two camps: those that heard it and threw out the past for a fresh start, and those that kept yelling 'Zepplin Rules!" And let's not forget it's just plain great rock and roll.

James Brown-Box Set

In my house James Brown is religion. All you need to know about funk starts and ends right here. If you haven't listened to James and felt the spirit at least once in your life, you will unquestionably die young no matter how old you are. It just don't get any better than this.

Alice Cooper-School's Out

Boys will be boys and we need a soundtrack. Alice Cooper was the original rock monster. Designed to scare your parents and feed adolescent dreams. Great rock and roll and handled intelligently enough to hold up over the years.

Talking Heads-More Songs about Buildings & Food

The Talking Heads were deep, funky, creative, and still managed to have a positive and jubilant feel to the music. David Byrne's lyrics remind one of a cave dweller or a space alien trying to make sense of modern America. To me this was an album of anthems. Musically it was simple yet subversive. This one spoke for me.

The Clash-London Calling
As time passes The Clash's music sounds better and better, and in retropspect they seem like an even more important force in rock music.
Most American's couldn't relate to their lower working class rage. I could! London Calling demonstrates what great songwriters these guys were and what great players they had become. This is what every other punk/alternative band would like to be. It's the real thing.

Prince-1999

This is Prince when his genuis was at its first bloom. Funky, horny, and free to play with musical forms in what ever way he wanted. The minimalist synths and funky rhythms were a perfect background for his twisted mix of sexuality, spiritual fervor, and punk attitude. And this is one of those rare times when a recording can please my musician's sensibilities and still make the females wanna get nasty.

Miles Davis-Kind Of Blue

When I first began to explore jazz, from the first time I heard the first few notes of 'So What' I was hooked. I don't really know why, but this album finds it's way on the turntable again and again.

Tom Waits-Raindogs

This album taught me a new way to hear. Waits draws from a vast knowledge of music. He refereences styles and periods most of us have never heard, and transports one to other worlds and days gone by.

Bob Marley-Natty Dread

Just out of high school, and realizing I didn't fit in with the world, and didin't want to fit in with the world, I spent countless hours smoking hash and listening to Natty Dread.

Frank Zappa-Sheik Yerbouti

This is Zappa at his best. Cynical, biting, and hilarious. The musical creativity is a paste-up collage of everything Zappa. The album came out in the heart of the disco age, As a child who hated it, Zappa's satire provided a great sense of relief that I was not alone in my feelings of disgust.

P.J. Harvey-Rid Of me

By the time this album reached my ears we were in the midst of the grunge/alternative movement, and I had almost given up on finding hard rock that was creative and sincere. P.J. Harvey is the real thing. When she moans and screams you know she is feeling it. A rare thing these days.

Bob Dylan-Time Out Of Mind

From the moment I heard the first chords of this album I was electrified. This album spoke to me as no other had in years. The lyrics are frightening in their worn desperation. Dylan's voice detoriorated into something beautiful. It is amazing to me that after so many years of being little more than a bad imitation of himself, Dylan could suddenly re-emerge with music so vital.

David Bowie-Outside

I have a hard time picking any one Bowie album. I could have just as easily put any of ten others on this list. Outside is astonishing for the time in which he did it. For an elder statemen among rock stars to suddenly throw away his collection of hits and take to the road playing material from this, one of the most creative and challenging albums even today, proves that Bowie is stilla punk, and still one the most vital artists producing rock music.

For years the most played CD in my collection was Billie Holiday. For my money there is still no one who sings the blues with more conviction.

Stevie Wonder-Innervisions

Given the last twenty years it's easy to forget that for a shining period Stevie Wonder was a powerhouse of progressive soul and funk. If the only song on this album was 'Living For The City' it would still rate a classic. This album is Wonder's masterwork from beginning to end.

King Crimson-Discipline

This album fused punk minalism with classic rock. This was a statement of musical philosophy. Bruford's tribal drumming and Fripp and Belew's mathematical guitar patterns combined to create a brand new sound.

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five-Best Of

The first rap song I ever heard was The Message. It played over the Pa. system at a Clash concert in Pittsburgh. As a fan of raggea dub, I just thought it was a really great new dub song. Two years later when I finally found the album I was blown away by The Furious Five's powerful lyrics and electronic beats. I tried to get my hometown's local club D.J. to play the disc and he laughed at me, saying people would never dance to this stuff.
